The Transportation Problem: California Outlook (Caltech Archives)
This preliminary report from the California Outlook establishes transportation as one of the most important factors in supporting the industrial growth of early Los Angeles (Caltech Archives). It allowed for the structured distribution of resources, such that if any part of the community becomes restricted to it, growth is limited. However, oversupply will also lead to unnecessary investment, so it was key to finding the balance between supplying the current demand without overshooting. The first facet is the Municipal Railroad, which would connect the city center with the harbor at San Pedro. This should be a cost-effective alternative to private railroads and allow for the large-scale movement of goods. Another important facet discussed is the development of a Union Depot as a central station for railroads. Building centralized infrastructure would allow railways to become more connected and accessible (“Union Station Los Angeles”). Other factors discussed include relieving main street congestion, building railroad terminals, and constructing a spur track system within the district (“A look at the history and future of rail transit in L.A.”). These factors demonstrate the deliberate design/coordination behind the growth of the city, showing how electrification paired with transportation systems is the reason large-scale expansion was possible.
